Residents in the Highlands neighborhood may experience low water pressure—beginning at 7 a.m.on June 18 and ending mid-morning the next day. The lower-than-normal water pressure will result from the transfer of water service from 85th Street’s old water main to its new 24-inch water main.

“The Water Division is asking customers in this area to limit their water use to essential needs during this timeframe,” said Greg Neumann, Kirkland’s water division manager. “We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.”

Installation of the 85th Street water main will continue until the second week of July. By that point, Kirkland’s contractor will have connected the new water main to the 16 lateral service lines, which convey water to homes and businesses north of Northeast 85th Street. This will mark the end of water main installation.

And it will allow Kirkland’s Northeast 85th Street Improvements contractor to finish the sidewalks, driveways, curbs, gutters and stormwater system on 85th Street’s north side. Johansen Excavating has finished approximately 80 percent of that work so far. To finish the rest, however, Johansen must first complete the stormwater system, which will be located where the existing 16-inch water main is now. Once crews decommission those remaining sections of the 16-inch water main they will be able to finish installing the north side’s sidewalk, curb, gutters and stormwater system.

In the meantime, Johansen continues making progress. Its day crews moved to the south side of 85th June 9 where they are removing old sidewalk, curb and gutter. Johansen expects to finish building the south side’s sidewalk, curb, gutters and stormwater system by the second week of July.
