Juanita Beach Park renovations may be temporarily at a standstill, but Windermere Kirkland employees brought some action back to the popular waterfront park on Friday.

About 40 volunteers painted, pruned, cleaned, weeded and did landscaping all day at the park as part of Windermere’s annual Community Service Day event.

The City of Kirkland terminated contractor DMSL Construction, Inc. earlier this month for not completing renovations on time.

“What’s exciting about this project is, even with the city’s loss of the contractor, most of the stuff we are doing wasn’t a part of the contract anyway,” said Mike Connolly, who owns Windermere Kirkland. He has participated in the service day event for as long as his office has been in Kirkland since 1985.

In fact, every year since 1984 Windermere associates nationwide have skipped work for a day to complete neighborhood improvement projects.

Several Kirkland employees also brought their families out to help, including Jan Carroll, who worked alongside her daughter, Mary.

And to help workers unwind, massage therapists from Redmond-based Nelson Chiropractic gave chair massages.
