A man sustained serious injuries when a woman in an SUV plowed through a fence on Rose Hill and into a car wash on Wednesday evening in Kirkland.

Police were called to Rose Hill Car Wash on Northeast 85th Street around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, responding to a report of a vehicle striking a male and pinning him against a building.

The worker, Alfonzo Castillo, was caught between the vehicle and the wall of the car wash, according to employees who watched the incident happen. The vehicle crashed through the fence bordering the exit of the car wash, across the driving lane and into the outer wall of the mini mart.

“I was on my way down the hall when I heard the bang,” said Patrice Christiansen, who was back working on Thursday afternoon. “I heard a bang and a big boom, like a crack-boom, and I turned around and the carts were flying everywhere.”

According to police, Castillo’s injuries included “broken legs, possibly more.” Castillo was transported Harborview Medical Center for his injuries.

The 46-year-old woman driving the SUV was taken to a Redmond emergency care facility.

The woman had recently been shopping at Safeway, but pulled into the parking lot just north of the car wash because she “wasn’t feeling well,” Kirkland Police Department Public Information Officer Rob Saloum said.

“She thought she was feeling better and started to drive through the lot, going westbound,” Saloum said. “That’s the last thing she remembered. The vehicle continued westbound, past the coffee stand in the lot and through the fence.”

The car wash was closed much of Wednesday night while police conducted an investigation.

Early damage estimates ranged between $20,000 to $30,000, according to the owner, who included lost business in his quick calculations. The northeast corner of the car wash had been cleared of merchandise as of Thursday afternoon, and the damaged inside wall was roped off.

Saloum said the incident was still under investigation.
