Carol Elizabeth Weeks Smith, 83, died at Friendsview Retirement Community in Newberg, Oregon on Saturday, April 23, 2022. Carol was born in Everett, Washington on September 7, 1938 and grew up in Marysville, Washington. Growing up on a farm, with a father who was a true cowboy, she learned to milk cows, ride horses, garden, cook, and sew at an early age. She had fond memories of riding her beloved horse, Queenie, to school each morning and then sending Queenie home to wait for her when school was done.
Carol attended college at the University of Puget Sound where she met the love of her life, David Smith.
After marrying on August 27, 1960 and graduating from UPS, they were encouraged to serve in the newly minted Peace Corps and gain respect for another part of the world. They were assigned to serve in Liberia, West Africa and spent two wonderful years there teaching school and spending time with Doctor Albert Schweitzer at his leper colony. This experience greatly influenced the trajectory of the rest of their lives and gave them an adventurous and entrepreneurial spirit.
Upon their return, their oldest daughter, Kathy, was born in 1964. Their second daughter, Kristy, was born in 1965. Kimmy, their third daughter was born in 1968. They raised their kids in Kirkland and after a brief stint in Virginia, they returned to Kirkland for David to take his dream job with the Washington State Patrol as the nation’s first State Patrol Psychologist. Carol taught both students and parents at the Kirkland Co-op Pre-School for over 30 years, followed by traveling the country educating teachers on early childhood development with the Bureau of Education and Research. She also went back to school in her 50’s at Seattle Pacific University to get her Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and ran a private counseling practice for many years. The Kirkland years were particularly filled with horseback riding on our beloved horse Princess, as well as many years of shuttling her kids to horse shows, swim practices, and swim meets all over the country. As empty nesters, they had many wonderful adventures traveling all over the world. A particular passion was to give each grandchild a special trip to a destination of their choice, which took them to Europe, Iceland, Africa, and Alaska.
Carol was proceeded in death by her mother, Dorothy Soldan Weeks; father Glenn Weeks; step-mother Nellie Weeks; brother Ronald Weeks; and beloved husband David H. Smith Ph.D.
She is survived by her three daughters, Kathryn Ann Smith Connor; Kristen Ellen Smith Jenkyns; Kimberly Joan Smith Gotter; her seven grandchildren, Danielle Fleischmann, Melanie Schattschneider, Kyle Wenger, Caitlyn Connor Kuenzi, Alayna Connor, Emily Gotter, and Jack Gotter; and five great grandchildren, Fynn and Felix Fleischmann, and Rhett, Sloane, and Jaeger Schattschneider.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Gig Harbor, Washington at the family beach cabin on Saturday, July 30.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
