Gerhard “Dieck” Dieckmann gently passed away April25, 2022 in Redmond, Washington, almost reaching his 100th birthday. He was born to Otto and Anna Dieckmann on July 10, 1922.
Dieck had a happy childhood, growing up in a loving German community, speaking only German until he started school. He had 2 older brothers, Otto and Werner, and a younger sister, Betty.
A junior high school teacher for 33 years, Dieck was a WWII veteran, husband, father, and all-around Renaissance Man. After being a Boy Scout himself, he was a Boy Scout Leader, as well as “Uncle Dieck” to YMCA summer campers for many years. He taught every junior high subject, except as he liked to say “girls’ PE and Home Economics.” His real love was teaching photography and drama. Many past students would come back to Kirkland Junior High to visit him, or see him around town and introduce themselves. He never failed to remember them.
Dieck was a devoted husband to his wife, Phyllis, enjoying 68 years of marriage before her death in 2017. He lost his eldest daughter, Nancy, to ALS in 2020. He is survived by his son Robert, daughter Laurie, grandson Karl, and their families.
A graveside service will be held on July 16, 2022 at 1:00 at Kirkland Cemetery.
