Lake Washington was a neutral name for the high school | Letter

In the interest of accurate reporting, I would like to correct Mr. Howard's version of Kirkland High School's change to Lake Washington High as reported in the April 19 issue of the Kirkland Reporter "Kirkland High was once the Hornets."

In the interest of accurate reporting, I would like to correct Mr. Howard’s version of Kirkland High School’s change to Lake Washington High as reported in the April 19 issue of the Kirkland Reporter “Kirkland High was once the Hornets.”

In the second to last paragraph of his article about Kirkland High changing their mascot from Hornets to Kangaroos, he wrote “The school moved from Market Street and rebuilt in its current location in the mid-1940s, and when the population boomed around Lake Washington during World War II, the school was renamed Lake Washington School High School.”

The facts are that in the fall of 1944 the school districts of Redmond and Kirkland consolidated into one school district, and Lake Washington was selected as a neutral name. In the fall of 1949 the school moved to its present location and the class of 1950 was the first class to graduate.
