The arts – whether it’s drawing or drama, music or movement – can stimulate and inspire, and lead to improved academics.
I have heard the complaints from people who did not vote for annexation and I understand their concerns. More laws,…

The holidays are here, and with them come the upset of family routines. Schools out, parties abound and there are…
With the recent success of the Kirkland Dog Off-leash Group (K-DOG) in gaining approval for the first off-leash dog park in Kirkland, we should also consider the safety of dogs and their owners who will eventually be using the space!
The City of Kirkland supports transit-oriented development (TOD) at the South Kirkland Park and Ride.
Get ready, you’ll be paying tolls on the 520 floating bridge next spring. You can already start pre-signing up at www.wsdot.wa.gov/goodtogo. I have mixed feeling about this $2-$4 dollar toll on 520.
Seems you can’t turn on the TV or radio, or open a magazine without hearing about hCG. Is it really…
Most people do not think about 3-2 counts or a pitcher warming up in the bullpen during this part of the year. But for most people in the area, baseball has been on their minds during the past week or so.
I have seen posts on Facebook about Dave’s passing from people who think that a slider is just a type of sandwich.
Most lost a friend on Nov. 10. The warm breeze that was Dave Niehaus’ voice in the dark and stormy landscape of Seattle sports is gone.
Recently lambasted for poor planning on the Parkplace project, the City of Kirkland should be given due credit for its foresight in other areas of planning.
City planners had adjusted the 2011-2012 budget for passage of one or both of the liquor initiatives 1100 or 1105. The failure of both measures to privatize liquor sales in the state of Washington could have cost the city more than $1 million during the next biennium.
But prudent planning puts the money back into the city budget.
Kudos to the city for thinking ahead. We hope the city will keep this up as it continues to work on budget issues in the coming weeks.
We would also suggest that the city use part of this $1 million to put garbage services back in the parks. The city slashed $600,000 overall from its Parks Department budget last year. This removed 50 garbage cans throughout 17 neighborhood parks, saving the city approximately $40,000.
Anyone notice that fall can be a stressful time? As the leaves change to all their glory, so do our…
Thumbs up to the Kirkland Cultural Council for their diligence in attempting to fill our empty downtown storefronts with artists….
June 1, 2011 will be an historic day for the City of Kirkland. We will become “even greater” as we are joined by the Finn Hill, North Juanita and Kingsgate neighborhoods. In seven short months, Kirkland will grow to a population of over 82,000 people and become the 12th largest city in Washington and the sixth largest city in King County.
During this election season I have covered voter forums and there are many hot issues that the candidates get asked…
It is the time of the year again when many of us get the sniffles, wondering when there will be a cure for the common cold at last. Of course, not everybody will fall sick. Some people seem to remain unscathed no matter what, while others succumb as soon as the temperatures drop. It’s a mystery how a chosen few can handle the germ assault so much better than the rest of us. These folks must have an extraordinarily robust immune system that protects them like an invisible shield. But were they born this way or did they acquire their immunity over time. And if so, how?
