Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs up to the Kirkland Downtown Association and the many volunteers who put on the annual tree lighting ceremony in downtown Kirkland.

Thumbs up to Ford of Kirkland for delivering turkeys to families of Kirkland Interfaith Transitions in Housing.

Thumbs up to the many community members who contributed food and donations towards the Eastside’s Month of Concern for the Hungry campaign.

Thumbs up to Celia Pinczower who will be diving for USC next fall.

Thumbs down to Republicans who fight for tax breaks for the wealthiest one percent and then turn around and complain about the national debt. You have to have money to pay off debt.

Thumbs down to our legal system. In its infinite wisdom the woman who stabbed her boyfriends ex-girlfriend 18 times in a Kirkland parking garage in attempting to kill her will only get a maximum of 20 years in prison. If that is not bad enough the woman already served time for killing another woman, who was pregnant. The fact that such a severe crime has such a short sentence is astounding without the woman’s past. But the fact that there is a history of violence should be a red flag to lock this woman up for a very long time.

Thumbs down to the person who stole two Salvation Army donation buckets during the past month in Kirkland. Stealing from anyone is wrong but when you steal from a charity it is reprehensible. May there be coal in your stocking for life.

Thumbs down to King County for not getting Juanita Drive Northeast cleared during the recent snowstorm. It is the only clear path from the top of Finn Hill and one of the busiest roads in the area. Hopefully it will get more attention the next time it snows.
