Thumbs up & thumbs down | Cheers to new graduates; jeers to squatters of waterfront home

Thumbs up to those students graduating from Kirkland High Schools. Take this time to reflect and celebrate the past 12 years and what you have accomplished before moving out into the world.

Thumbs up

To those students graduating from Kirkland High Schools. Take this time to reflect and celebrate the past 12 years and what you have accomplished before moving out into the world.

To those protesting British Petroleum and the Gulf oil spill. Elected officials and BP need to know how you feel about the disaster or nothing will change in drilling regulations.

To the City of Kirkland for thinking ahead with their plan to buy the “My Home Wholesale” store for a new public safety building. Serving a city of what will be over 80,000 people as of the annexation date of June 1, 2011 is no small task and the KPD and courts need the space to execute their jobs to the best of their ability.

To the 37 neighbors, supporters and small businesses who donated funds to help save the Fourth of July festivities in Kirkland. Celebrate Kirkland still needs $25,000 in donations to make it happen.

Thumbs down

To those boycotting British Petroleum. While we support the sentiment behind the boycott, be mindful of the fact that BP needs resources to clean up the spill and reimburse local businesses in the states effected for lost income. Without BP the tax payers will pay for the disaster.

To those occupying the $3.2 million mansion on the Market neighborhood. To you we say: Get out! Record show that the house is not yours. If you truly own the house move out, use the proper channels and fight the battle in the courts.

To those who own Totem Lake Mall and have not attempted to do anything with it. It is an eye sore and you owe it to the people of Kirkland to sell or remodel. The location has great potential for residents and retailers in the area.

To our elected officials who have yet to stiffen state DUI laws. The Kirkland man, who killed two Decatur High School students on June 9, had two previous DUI stops and was still out on the road. Our elected officials should be ashamed. The drunk driver deserves two life sentences behind bars.

To whoever is stealing mail and plants in the Highlands neighborhood. It is a federal offense to tamper with another’s mail. And plants? Try reaping what you sow from your own garden.
