City league beach volleyball championships set for next week

Dust off your flip flops and slather on the sunblock: Kirkland’s city beach volleyball championships are slated to begin next week at Juanita Beach Park.

Teams will compete for city championships in three divisions, bringing a third summer of serves, spikes and sand to a close.

The top four teams in each division make the championship tournament.

‘Friendship’ leads the Coed Upper division, and is undefeated with a 16-0 record. ‘Don’t Call It A Comeback’ and ‘Life Is A Beach’ have locked in the second and third seeds in the division.

‘Beluga Waffles’ and ‘Sandtastic 4’ were tied at 7-8 before the division’s final matches on Tuesday.

The standings are tighter in the Coed Lower division, which will wrap up on Thursday. ‘Beach No-Body’ lead the division at 13-2, followed by ‘Diggin’ Juanita’ at 11-4. Three teams — “Merica,’ ‘Common Carriers,’ and ‘Split Hit’ are were at 8-7 for the third and fourth seeds. “Merica’ and ‘Split Hit’ are scheduled to play on Thursday.

The field in the Women’s Lower division is set. ‘Misty May’s Minions’ led with a 14-1 record before the division’s final games on Wednesday evening. ‘Sand Witches’ was two games back, and ‘Quicksand’ was 10-5. ‘May The Spike Be With You’ was nine games back at 5-10, with a two-game lead for the fourth seed.

Teams are scheduled to play for the Coed Upper division at 6 p.m. on Aug. 23, the Women’s Lower division on Aug. 24 and the Coed Lower division on Aug. 25.

The city softball leagues are scheduled to wrap up in the first two weeks of September at Lee Johnson Field. ‘Schmidtty Hitters’ leads the Men’s Intermediate division, and ‘Kodiaks’ leads the Men’s Lower division.
