Eagles beat Lutes by nine | College men’s basketball

Dak Shagren scored 19 points on 58-percent shooting as the Northwest University (NU) Eagles downed the Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) Lutes 65-56 in non-league play on the Names Family Court Tuesday night.It was NU's fourth game in five nights.

Dak Shagren scored 19 points on 58-percent shooting as the Northwest University (NU) Eagles downed the Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) Lutes 65-56 in non-league play on the Names Family Court Tuesday night.It was NU’s fourth game in five nights. Shagren hit 7-of-12 shots and went 5-for-10 from beyond the three-point arc to lead the way for the Eagles who posted their seventh win of the season.

The game didn’t start out in the Eagles favor as the Lutes got off to a quick start and taking an early 17-7 lead with 7:39 left in the half, but the Eagles would heat up and the defense would clamp down as NU would go on a 12-0 run to take the lead 19-17 with 6:18 to go in the half. PLU would regain the lead briefly at 22-21, but a 6-0 spurt by the Eagles would give them back the lead, 28-22 with 24 seconds on the clock. The Lutes would hit a trey with four seconds on the clock to close the gap to 28-25 at the break.

NU (7-2) would never trail in the second half as PLU would get to within four twice, but each time the Eagles would answer to build their lead. PLU would make it a 36-32 game with 13 minutes left in the game, but a lay-in by Brandyn Winkley and another one by C.J. Carter would five NU a 40-32 lead which they would never give up the remainder of the game.

In addition to Shagren’s 19, Thomas Jordan scored 12 points and handed out four assists while teammate Tomas Ogbaslassie chipped in 11 for the Eagles, who shot 45 percent for the game. NU held a 35-30 margin in rebounding with Marko Nikolic grabbing 10.

PLU (1-2) was led by Dylan Foreman’s 17 points and eight rebounds. Brandon Lester added 11 points for the Lutes who shot 40 percent for the game on 19-of-47 shooting.

The Eagles take a short break for Thanksgiving before they return to the Pavilion Friday to host Lewis-Clark State.
