The Juanita High School girls swim team had one of the best years in the history of the program last season as they finished undefeated in dual meets and finished second overall during the state championship meet. But the swimmers want more.
The road to finishing with a state title began during the preseason and the team will have to be prepared for every challenge.
“Our first meet against Mercer Island will be a big one,” said Rebel’s head coach Dawn Maurer. “We upset their undefeated streak last year.”
Leading the way for the team will be two returning state champions.
Juanita High School senior Kelly Tannhauser won the state title in the 200-yard freestyle in 2008, while senior Emilie Kaufman won the state title in the 100-yard freestyle and took second in the 100-yard breast stroke.
The team will continue to be extremely tough in diving with junior Celia Pinczower giving the Rebels some big points off the board. Pinczower made a huge impact last year as she took third in state.
And the talent is not just concentrated at the top of the lineup this season.
“We are a well-rounded team,” said Maurer. “We have strength in every event.”
The team’s youth is also a big strength. Sophomore Hanna Armstrong will be a top competitor in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle. Junior Rachel Kurtz will also make an impact for the team.
The focus of the Rebels this year is to improve on last season and there is only one place to go from being runner up.
“Team goal is for everyone to contribute to the team’s success,” said Maurer. “We would like to come back strong at State again this year.”
