Lisa Nelson pitched six innings of perfect softball for Juanita High, leading the Rebels to a 3-0 win over Roosevelt in the 3A SeaKing District tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday in Seattle.
With the win, Juanita (18-5) qualified for the state tournament as the top five teams from District II move on to the next round regardless of finish.
But though Nelson rolled through the first six innings, the seventh frame came with a bump.
Roosevelt’s Jane Merlino singled on the first pitch of the seventh inning to snap Nelson’s perfect game. Nelson struck out a batter, but the Roughriders reached base on an error.
Then Nelson walked a batter to load the bases with one out and Juanita leading 3-0.
The next two batters went down swinging for Nelson’s 17th and 18th strikeouts of the game. The Rebels were out of a pinch and into a state berth for the eight consecutive year.
Nelson finished with one hit, one walk and no errors in seven innings. Roosevelt’s Kayla Ferguson went the distance as well, finishing with three strikeouts and seven hits.
Brynn Radke went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI and a walk for Juanita. Gianna Paribello also went 2-3 with one run scored.
Briar Swayne hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Rebels the final three-run advantage.
Next, the Rebels are scheduled to play Eastside Catholic in the District II semifinals at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 19 at Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle.
Eastside Catholic dealt Ballard, the regular-season 3A Metro League champion, a 14-1 loss in the quarterfinals after defeating Bellevue 17-8 in the first round. Eastside Catholic is 13-8 on the year, and finished sixth in the 3A Metro League standings.
