Juanita girls basketball earns first district victory in 20 years

The Juanita High School girls basketball team held on to win their first Sea-King District tournament game in more than 20 years Monday, defeating Franklin 45-44. The game, which took place on Franklin's home court, began with the Rebels pulling out to a 13-5 lead after eight minutes of play. Juanita needed every one of those eight points during the next 24 minutes of play. Franklin slowly chipped away at the lead, taking four points off in the second quarter, one during the third and two more points off during the fourth quarter.

The Juanita High School girls basketball team held on to win their first Sea-King District tournament game in more than 20 years Monday, defeating Franklin 45-44.

The game, which took place on Franklin’s home court, began with the Rebels pulling out to a 13-5 lead after eight minutes of play. Juanita needed every one of those eight points during the next 24 minutes of play. Franklin slowly chipped away at the lead, taking four points off in the second quarter, one during the third and two more points off during the fourth quarter.

One of the reasons that the Quakers could not catch up completely was the play of Juanita’s Kimberly Baba and Kate Cryderman. Baba’s 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists, were assisted by Cryderman’s double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

With the win, Juanita improves to 14-10 overall on the season.

The Rebels play at 6:30 p.m., Thursday at Bellevue College against Holy Names in the second round of the district playoffs.
