For another year the Juanita girls basketball team edged closer to the 3A state tournament, but couldn’t quite capitalize on early season success to propel the team into a state berth. The Rebels’ season came to an end Saturday, Feb. 19 with a district loss to Cleveland.
The teams ended the first quarter tied with 11 points apiece, but Cleveland pulled ahead with 19 points in the second quarter to gain a 30-19 lead at halftime. The Rebels bounced back into the game during the third quarter, outscoring Cleveland 14-8 to end the quarter with a 38-33 score. The final score was 45-42 for the Eagles.
Bre Carter had the team high of 15 points during the match, while her sophomore teammate Mikayla Jones put up 11 for the team. Kate Cryderman and Molly Grager each added seven and Taylor Paddock had two.
The day before the Rebels faced off against Liberty, in a KingCo rematch. Juanita beat Liberty 53-41 to advance, looking for the final district spot in the state tournament.
The Lady Rebels controled the match from the outset, and not even a 21 point fourth quarter from the Patriots could keep their season alive.
Jones picked up 18 points for the Rebels, while Cryderman had 14 overall.
In the Rebels second match of the tournament, they faced Holy Names, the top team in the state. It proved from early on to be a tough game for the Rebels. After a 20 point first quarter, Holy Names took the game and ran with it, during Tuesday’s district match between Juanita and top ranked Holy Names. The final score was 74-41 for the Cougars.
Offensively, Holy Names never slowed, while holding every Juanita player to under 10 points in the game.
Against Holy Names Tayler Lloyd had eight points, while Cryderman and Grager each had seven. Destry Seiler had six, Carter and Jones had five and Paddock had three.
The Rebels ended the season with a 19-7 overall record.
