The Juanita High School track and field team had 11 athletes compete in the Portland Indoor Track Classic at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland last weekend.
The invitational indoor meet was run in conjunction with the US Indoor Championships that featured some of Americas best track and field athletes.
“For a fun early-season meet on a surface and track size that they have never run on before, our athletes did extremely well,” said Rebels coach Neil Kells. “The highlight of the weekend had to be getting to watch some of Americas best track and field athletes competing and getting to mingle with them. They had the same warm-up area and had all access to the venue. Very exciting.”
The Rebels ran as unattached athletes, which means they were not there specifically representing Juanita.
Salvon Ahmed, Makiah Gilmer and Nathan Casebier won each of their heats during the sprints.
Ahmed won the 60 meters overall in a time of 6.97 seconds, just .01 seconds ahead of the next closest athlete. Casebier finished 18th, while Gilmer was 11th during the race.
Natayah Bauer finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 38-feet, 7¾-inches. The throw was ¾ of an inch short of her lifetime best. Randy Jones place eighth in the long jump with a distance of 19-feet, 7-inches.
Ahmed also finished 13th in the 200 meters with a time of 23.62 seconds and Gilmer was 12th in 23.54. Casebier finished 16th overall in a lifetime best of 23.80.
Kelsey McLean won her heat in the 60 meters, finishing tenth overall out of 53 competitors. She also finished 23rd overall in the 200 meters with a time of 27.68 seconds.
“The announcer was beside himself with all of our kids winning their heats,” Kells said. “Our distance crew then took over and performed very well for early season and in an event that we don’t typically run.”
