Juanita volleyball falls one win short of state berth | Prep volleyball

With just one more win the Juanita volleyball team would have secured their spot in the 3A state tournament. But a strong Holy Names team stood in their way, knocking the team out of the district tournament, finishing with sixth place overall.

With just one more win the Juanita volleyball team would have secured their spot in the 3A state tournament. But a strong Holy Names team stood in their way, knocking the team out of the district tournament, finishing with sixth place overall.

Holy Names entered the district tournament last weekend as the No. 2 seed from Metro. The Cougars beat Juanita in four tough sets 3-2 (24-26, 11-25,25-23, 18-25). Alivia Stoddard provided terrific defense against Holy Names with 13 digs, and Jade Finau added 11 digs along with her 33 assists. Dana Michels hit 24 kills and added seven digs on defense as well. Alex Gollersrud had six kills.

Prior to the Holy Names loss the Rebels faced Chief Sealth in the first game of the tournament. Juanita quickly beat the Metro No. 8 seed 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-7). Finau had 29 assists and five kills while Michaels put down 18 kills, and Marrs added five kills.

With the win the team moved on to play Bishop Blanchet, the 2009 state champions. Blanchet beat the Rebels 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 19-25). Candace Croer had 15 digs on defense and four aces, while Stoddard added nine digs for the team. Michaels had another 12 digs, with 13 kills and Finau contributed 22 assists on the court.

With the loss the team moved into the consolation bracket last Saturday, beating conference foe Mercer Island in a five game set. The Rebels defeated the Islanders 3-2 (27-29, 25-21, 25-21, 24-26, 15-8). Gollersrud had 17 kills and five digs, while Finau led with 39 assists, nine digs and seven kills. Michaels posted 22 kills in the match, and Cromer had 16 digs.

Immediately after winning the match, Juanita moved on to play Seattle Prep, losing 3-0 (24-26, 11-25, 25-23, 18-25) to the No. 4 seed out of Metro. Michaels had five kills, Gollersrud posted six kills and Finau had 17 assists and eight digs.

Following the loss the team moved into another winner to state match again Holy Names, eventually falling 3-0.

The Rebels finished the season with a 11-3 league record and a 14-7 overall record.
