Juanita’s Garber takes 3A state golfing title in Spokane

Juanita High School's Frank Garber took home some serious hardware Thursday, winning the 3A state golf title.

Juanita High School’s Frank Garber took home some serious hardware Thursday, winning the 3A state golf title.

The sophomore shot a 135 during the 36-hole tournament at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane.

Garber, who finished nine strokes better than second place finisher Chris Babcock from Shorewood, did not look like he would run away with the win after shooting a one-under 70 during the first round.

Two other players, including Babcock shot a 69 during the first day.

But the score kept the Juanita sophomore in the title hunt. No one saw the six-under 65 coming during the second round, as Garber ran away with the title. The 65 was 10 strokes better than four players who finished in the top 10 during the two-day even.

Lake Washington’s Steven Hopkins qualified for state but shot an 84 during the first round, just missing the cut for the second round by three strokes.
