Cooper McLeod continues to skate away with honors.
The Juanita High freshman and 12-time national champion speedskater recently received the accolade of U.S. Speedskating Long Track Male Development Skater of the Year for the second consecutive year.
McLeod, 15 — who also plays basketball for Juanita — has qualified to compete in the Olympic Trials in Milwaukee, Wis. in January.
The Puget Sound Speedskating Club member holds 13 national records, and this year, he added Long Track Outdoor – Junior C Men – 500, 800 and 1,500 meters to his list.
According to the U.S. Speedskating website, McLeod said in 10 years, he plans to have graduated from college and be an Olympian.
McLeod started rollerskating when he was 10 months old, competed in his first inline skating meet when he was 3 and began speedskating on ice when he was 8. He has won many national championships along the way.
This past year, “I’ve incorporated weight training into my workouts, so I spend a lot of time at the gym. I skate 3-4 times a week and do dryland exercises after each practice. My goal is to get stronger and continue to improve my technique so my times keep improving,” he said on the U.S. Speedskating site.
