Lake Washington used a four-run fourth inning to manufacture a big lead and never looked back, burying Newport 9-2 in the KingCo 4A championship game at Woodinville High School on May 14.
Eric Folkers and Chris Viltz had back-to-back RBIs during the inning, as the Kangs (17-5) grabbed the district’s top berth into the state tournament, which begins play this Saturday.
Lake Washington took advantage of 12 walks and three hit batters by Newport pitchers in the game and stole seven bases to give Newport (14-9) its first loss in nine games.
It was Lake Washington’s second KingCo title in five seasons.
The Kangs will open up the state tournament May 23 at Kent Memorial Park. Their opponent had yet to be determined as of press time.
