The Lake Washington High boys 4×100 meter relay team is, apparently, saving its best for last.
The Kangs qualified for the Class 3A state finals with a season-best time on Friday at Mt. Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma, finishing with the second-fastest time from prelims at 42.83 seconds.
The team’s previous best came in the SeaKing District preliminary round on May 18, at 42.98.
Juanita senior Nathan Casebier set a decent time in the finals for the 110 meter hurdles, finishing fourth in 15.09 seconds. It was Casebier’s best finish at the state championships.
Juanita’s Randy Jones finished fifth in the long jump competition, clearing a career-best 22 feet, 5.5 inches. Jones also competed in the 300 meter hurdle preliminary heats, but finished well out of contention for finals.
Kelsey McLean barely missed finals for the 3A girls 100 meter dash, finishing ninth with a time of 12.680 seconds. Kamiakin’s Heather Donais, who finished eighth, set a mark of 12.674 seconds.
Juanita’s Shelby Wilks also barely missed finals in the 300 meter hurdles, finishing ninth.
The Juanita girls’ 4×100 meter relay team, composed of Colleen O’Neal, Milena Kolesnikov, Jayla Kidd and McLean, finished 12th and did not make finals.
Juanita’s Noah Kells finished 10th overall in the 800 meter prelims and did not make finals.
Lake Washington junior Brandon Gockel threw well short of his season best in the javelin, clearing 141 feet, 8 inches to take 15th overall. A season PR would have put Gockel in the top four.
Lake Washington’s Scout Callens, who runs a leg of the 4×100 meter relay, finished 12th overall in the 200 meters and did not make finals.
Lake Washington freshman Thayer Davis set a season-best of 60.1 seconds in the 400 meters, finishing 12th overall.
Any remaining events will wrap up on Saturday. Check for results over the weekend, and be sure to grab a copy of the Reporter for a full wrap up.
