Lake Washington’s Brittany Blaskovich placed first in the pole vault competition on day one of competition at the 3A KingCo track and field championships on Wednesday at Juanita High School.
Four girls’ events ran finals on Wednesday, with the remaining events finishing on Friday.
Blaskovich, also a member of the Kangs’ gymnastics team, cleared 9 feet, 6 inches on Wednesday, tying Juanita’s Katrina Teo but taking the No. 1 spot on faults.
Juanita junior Natayah Bauer took the discus competition, clearing 113 feet, 7 inches.
Juanita sophomore Tamani Smart came two inches from a new season best in the long jump, reaching 16 feet, 4.5 inches to take second overall.
The boys completed three events on Wednesday.
Interlake’s Luke Beauchamp set a new career-best in the 1,600 meters, edging Juanita’s trio of Tom Mikkelson, Adrian Goodwin and Noah Kells by more than five seconds.
Lake Washington’s Dylan Bacher was the top finisher from Kirkland-area high schools in the shot put, finishing fifth with a throw of 40 feet, 3.25 inches.
Juanita’s Randy Jones finished third in the long jump, clearing 21 feet, 2.25 inches.
Kirkland-area athletes did fairly well in preliminary heats for the shorter races on Wednesday.
Juanita junior Salvon Ahmed qualified second overall for the 100- and 200-meter finals, setting a new career-best mark of 22.77 seconds in his heat of the 200 meters.
Lake Washington senior Scout Callens takes the overall No. 1 seed in the 200 to Friday’s finals after running a 22.59 on Wednesday.
Kang junior Brett Walker ran a career-best 50.92 seconds for the overall No. 2 seed in the 400-meter finals.
Juanita took the top two seeds in the boys’ 800 meters, with Kells winning in 2:01.89 and Michael Gengo taking second in 2:02.38.
Nathan Casebier was a half-second off his career-best in the 110-meter hurdles, but still skated into the No. 1 seed in Friday’s finals, also taking the third overall seed into the 300-meter event.
Jones set a career-best of 41.02 seconds to take the top overall seed into the finals for the 300-meter hurdles.
The Rebel girls took the top two seeds in the 100-meter hurdles. Senior Natalie Kalda had the top time of 16.40 seconds, while junior Shelby Wilks had the second overall time of 16.41 seconds.
Kalda and Wilks also qualified in the top three for the 300-meter hurdle finals.
Events on Friday are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
