Four Kirkland athletes and their teammates from the Crossfire Select ‘96 Farzeen team recently became the champions of the GU13 WSYSA Commissioner’s Cup. The Commissioners’ Cup is a Washington Youth Soccer developmental state level tournament, focusing on District level teams. Preliminaries start in early January and end with finals on February 27 and 28th at Starfire Sports Complex. Assistant Coach Lynn Glenn and four girls from Kirkland were on this team: Lauren McAllister, Maeve O’Connor, Alyssa Gwinn, and Caitlyn Glenn.
The team is coached by Head Coach Farzeen Mohazzabfar, and assistant coaches Lynn Glenn and Jim Watt. Since the team came together in spring of 2009, they have had a winning habit. As a team, their overall record is 26 wins, two losses, and four draws. Together, they have scored 80 goals and allowed only nine.
Among their successes, they list the Fred Meyer’s Commissioners State Cup, North Puget Sound League Division I Championship, Sky River Division I Championship, and Crossfire Select Cup Division I Championship.
When asked about the success of this team, Coach Farzeen immediately identifies the unique team chemistry among these girls. “Our players truly like and respect each other. These young ladies fully embraced the team concept and became the most coachable team we have had the pleasure of coaching.” Coach Farzeen also credits his coaching staff. The team has a ratio of one coach for every five players, and this coaching staff works very well together. The coaches share one focus: helping build soccer players who will love and respect the game of soccer and continue to play into their 30’s and 40’s. “We ask our players not to worry about the game score and just play the game like we teach.”
The February 27th state championship represents the end of a long and successful year for these four Kirkland athletes and their teammates. Even though they are enjoying a well-deserved rest from soccer, it is clear that they already have their eyes on the upcoming 2010 season.
