A handful of young Kirklanders will have a shot at a state championship on Thursday.
The Kirkland 9/10 All-Star softball team beat Camas 6-1 in the Little League Softball state tournament on Tuesday, July 19, at Stan Hedwall Field in Chehalis, earning a spot in the state title game.
Camas scored on a throwing error in the top of the first inning after breaking up Kya Aldrich’s no-hit streak to take a 1-0 lead.
Mary Madaline Roe stole home on a wild pitch in the top of the third inning to tie the game, then Makenzie Reynolds dropped a two-run fly ball deep into the outfield. A wild pitch on the next at-bat allowed two runners to score, putting Kirkland ahead 5-1.
Reynolds added an in-the-park home run, her second of the tournament, in the top of the fifth inning.
Kirkland won the District 9 title on July 11 behind a perfect game from Aldrich, who delivered another no-no in the first round of the state tournament. Kirkland then beat Mukilteo in the quarterfinals on July 17.
Kirkland will play the winner between Camas and Mukilteo in the state championship game, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on July 21 at Stan Hedwall Field. Should Kirkland lose on July 21, the teams would play a rematch at the same time on July 22.
