Three Lake Washington seniors officially signed their paperwork to play collegiate sports next year.
Darien Nelson-Henry will attend Pennsylvania University to play basketball, while Jessica Zogg will head to Florida to play soccer for Rollins College, while Emma Holm will attend Seattle Pacific to play soccer.
“These three represent what is good about high school,” said Lake Washington Athletic Director George Crowder. “They are tremendous young people of character and integrity. I’m proud they have worn the LW uniform and I am incredibly proud of all three of them.”
All three said the schools they have picked were essentially the perfect fit.
“After my visit, it was just the perfect fit and I clicked right away with the coaches and the team,” said Zogg, who played varsity soccer all four years at Lake Washington.
“I know Rollins College has hit the jackpot with her,” said Zogg’s coach Suzanne Hart. “She is a tremendous student and terrific person. I’m going to miss her a ton.”
Nelson-Henry, who helped lead the Kangs to their first state appearance in years during his sophomore season, said he not only like the program at Pennsylvania, but that it would challenge him academically too.
“I fit in really well,” he said. “The coaches there are awesome, actually they remind me a lot of my coaches here. It’s a good environment for me.”
Basketball coach Brian Lund said he was proud that Nelson-Henry not only picked a school where he will thrive as a basketball player, but also as a student.
“I’m proud that he’s going to a school on that academic level, a school that when his real life begins will benefit him a lot,” said Lund.
Holm, another four year starter for the Kangs, and a captain for the last three seasons, will play for Seattle Pacific.
“I wanted to stay somewhat local,” she said. “I liked the coaches and the staff. I’d played for them before on the Olympic Development League and I have three teammates there that I’ve played with, so that meant a lot. I like how good, prestigious, the team is.”
“She is one of the most skilled soccer players I’ve ever seen,” said Hart of Holm. “Like with Jessie, they hit the jackpot here. She’s a tremendous student, soccer player and athlete.”
Hart said that SPU’s head coach Chuck Sekyra was her coach in college.
“It’s very dear to my heart that she’ll be playing for him and that I’ll be able to go watch games,” said the coach.
