In a match that used to be played for pride, but now is a conference game, the Lake Washington boys basketball team beat Juanita 71-61 last week. The Kangs, who have opened the season with a 4-1 record over came a fast paced second half to earn the win.
Devin Jackson put up 21 points for the Rebels, while Kellen Gildersleves had 17 points overall, teammate Nicola Stanjik had five, Avery Britton added four, as did Ty Eng and Brett Hamre and Ryan Reed each had three points. Nate Dean and Lee Woodward had two points.
For Lake Washington both Kramer Taylor and Matt Stuadacher had 19 points as a team high, while Darien Nelson-Henry put up 18 for the team. Guy Lynott had 10 points, Mike Hanson had three and Robert Reyes added two.
Later in the week the Kangs lost to Mount Si 65-55 on Dec. 10. The Wildcats, though they trailed at the end of the first quarter, picked up the lead going into the half with a 23-21 score and continued to lead through the rest of the game. Staudacher posted 16 points for the team, followed by Nelson-Henry’s 13 points. Lynott added 12, Kramer had eight and Reyes put up five for the team, along with Cody Bernstein’s single point.
The team rebounded from the loss with an overtime win against former 4A conference rival Redmond in the Les Schwab Preview at Highline Community College on Dec. 11.
The Kangs trailed 20-12 going into the break at the half, but found their stride in the third quarter, posting 18 points to Redmond’s 11. The four quarter tied things up at 38 to force overtime. Lake Washington outscored Redmond 9-4 in the last minutes of the game for a 47-42 win.
Nelson-Henry posted 22 points overall, while Lynott had 12, Staudacher had eight points, Reyes three and Taylor two.
Juanita falls to Liberty, Snohomish
The Juanita boys team, after losing to Lake Washington earlier in the week, also fell to Liberty and Snohomish late last week.
On Friday, Dec. 10 the team lost 51-47 to Liberty in a KingCo conference match.
The Rebels led at the half by two points, but the Patriots caught up to within one point of Juantia in the third and ran away with a 21 point fourth quarter to take the win.
Kellen Gildersleves had 23 points during the game, with Ryan Reed posting five, Avery Britton three, Brett Hamre two, Lee Woodward two and Devin Jackson one.
The following night the team lost to Snohomish in a non-conference game. The Panthers controlled the game early on, with a 20-9 lead going into the second quarter. The Rebels picked up their stride later on, but it wasn’t enough to take back the led, losing 65-51.
Ty Eng had 11 points as the team’s scoring leader for the night, while Hamre had 10, followed by Gildersleves seven, Reed’s six, Jackson’s four, Taylor Williams four and two points by both Jyran McNairy and Nicola Stanjik.
