Solidifying their No. 3 spot in the KingCo standings, the Lake Washington girls basketball team earned a KingCo victory Wednesday night, beating Mercer Island. The final score was 39-30.
It didn’t start the way it ended for Lake Washington, as Mercer Island held the lead at the end of the first quarter with an 11-6 score. In a very low scoring second quarter (6-3), the Lady Kangs edged closer, ending the half with a 14-12 score.
Lake Washington cut the Islanders lead by one point in the third quarter, ending with 11 points and Mercer Island had 10. But it was the final minutes of the game that ended up mattering the most. Mercer Island scored six points, while Lake Washington ran away with 16 points to secure the win.
For the Kangs Hunter Hopkins posted 11 points, while Whitney Dunlap added 10, Peyton Wozeniak had eight, Claire Anderson had six and both Cassie Lively and Sara Wilson had two.
For Mercer Island, Savanna Reid had the team high of eight points, followed by seven from Julia Blumstein and six from Ari Moscatel. Lauren Ellis scored three points, while Brooke Berhbaum, Jamie Mounger and Carly Andersen had two points each.
The Islanders face Mount Si on Friday, Jan. 13 at home in the team’s first annual White Out game starting at 6:30 p.m. Lake Washington will travel to Interlake Friday for a 6:30 p.m. KingCo game.
So far this season, Juanita holds the top spot in the league with a 6-1 record and 11-2 overall. Lake Washington is No. 3 with a 5-2 league record and 8-5 overall. Mercer Island is No. 7 in the league with a 1-6 league record and 1-11 overall.
