It didn’t even seem like the game was over.
On a last second basket, stolen during an in-bound pass, Seattle Prep’s DJ Fenner ended the game against Lake Washington with a 42-40 score.
The district semi-final game between the Kangs and Seattle Prep had been tied with 3.9 seconds on the clock. Frenner stole the incoming pass and made the two points in the same movement to finish the game.
The match started much the way it ended, with Seattle Prep hitting a three point basket on its first possession, followed by a three from Matt Staudacher.
Lake Washington held a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Seattle Prep gained a strong lead in the second quarter, holding the Kangs to just four points in the second quarter. The halftime score was 26-26 for the Panthers.
After looking sluggish on the floor at the end of the first half, the Kangs bounced back in the third quarter, but Seattle Prep always stayed several points ahead. Prep remained ahead on the scoreboard at the end of the third quarter with a 34-29 game.
Lake Washington quickly turned things around at the beginning of the fourth quarter, grinding to the basket and keeping Seattle Prep from scoring. With 6:13 on the clock the Kangs were down 37-32, but thanks to solid shooting from the free throw line and offensive drives, the Kangs tied the game with 1:25 left in the game.
Both teams were tied at 38 points with just 16.4 seconds left to go, followed by a two from Prep and two from Lake Washington, before Fenner made the winning basket.
Lake Washington moved on to Saturday’s third/fourth place match between the loser of the O’Dea vs. Rainier Beach game. The game will be played at Bellevue College at 11:30 a.m.
With a win on Saturday, the Kangs would enter the regional round of the state tournament on Friday, Feb. 24 as the No. 3 team, playing against the No. 3 team from District 3/4 at Jackson High School. A loss on Saturday and the Kangs will travel to Rogers High School as the No. 4 seed, playing the No. 2 team from District 3/4.
