With three members of the team competing at the Mat Classic event last weekend, the Lake Washington team earned three state medals for being among the top eight wrestlers in the state.
Lake Washington’s Joel Navas, a senior wrestling in the 125 division, lost his first round match, but won four straight in the consolation bracket to stay alive in the competition. His loss to Aaron Blaine from Hudson’s Bay pushed him into the match wrestling for fifth or six place against Travis Reano from Enumclaw. Navas lost with a 15-0 major decision to finish in sixth place.
Jerry Petrechko was fifth overall in the 171 weight division. He won his first match of the meet against North Central’s Sam Rykken, but lost to Lucas Huyber from Auburn Mountainview in the second round.
Petrechko went on a two match winning streak to stay in the competition, before falling to Phil Frazier from Mercer Island. He then beat conference rival Juanita’s Logan McCallum for the fifth place, while McCallum brought back the sixth place medal.
Jack Michels earned a fourth place finish for the Kangs in the 215 weight class. He won the first two rounds of his meet, before falling to Jake Laden of University in the semifinals. A consolation win pushed him in to the third/fourth place match, where he lost to Jimmy Trull from Bellevue with a fall in 1:37 to finish fourth.
Juanita’s Jeremiah Laufasa brought back the second place medal on Saturday. He won three straight matches, all by decision before the title match against conference opponent Josh Mitchell from Mount Si. Mitchell beat Laufasa with a 7-3 decision.
