Lake Washington High senior Jackie Castro finished second in her weight bracket in the Region 1 girls wrestling tournament on Feb. 11 at Sedro-Woolley High School, qualifying for the Mat Classic for the third year in a row.
Castro earned pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals before losing to Okanagan’s Meredith Bain in the 190-pound championship match. The top two wrestlers from each bracket advance to the state championships, scheduled for this weekend in Tacoma.
The Reporter ran a feature on Castro’s strides in football — Lake Washington’s linewoman — in October.
Castro first made the state tournament as a sophomore, but lost both her matches by fall. A year later, Castro lost by fall with one second remaining in her opening match, and lost by 3-0 decision in the consolation bracket.
In this winter’s Mat Classic, Castro is set for a first-round match against Raymond’s Johanna Crow. Newport sophomore Megan Mason is the only other KingCo wrestler to make the girls’ 190-pound bracket at state.
The first session is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Feb. 17 at the Tacoma Dome.
