The Lake Washington High School football team climbed back within a game of .500 with a 28-21 win against Shorewood in Kirkland on Friday.

The Thunderbirds looked like they would swoop down and take the game early, building a 14-0 lead through the first quarter.

But a two-yard touchdown run by Elliot Phillips capped the first scoring drive for the Kangs and cut the lead in half during the second quarter. Shorewood would score again on its next possession but for the last time during the game.

A 14-yard touchdown pass from DJ Mann to Spsncer Muller cut the lead to just seven points entering halftime.

A three-yard touchdown run by Phillips tied the game during the third quarter but it would be a huge 55-yard touchdown pass from Mann to Scout Callens during the fourth quarter that would win the game for the Kangs.

Lake Washington improves to 2-3 with the win and will host Mercer Island at 7 p.m. on Oct. 17.
