Northwest University men heat up in second half, win thriller over Corban

Trailing by 17 points with 13 minutes to go in the game, the Northwest University mens basketball team put on a furious comeback for a 90-86 victory over Corban University on Friday at the NU Pavilion in Kirkland.

Dak Shagren led Northwest (9-7 Cascade, 17-7) with 26 points on 9 for 15 shooting. Justice Martion came off the bench to score 19 and Ben Tucakovic contributed 14 points for NU. The Eagles shot 51 percent for the game, but 65.5 percent in the second half.

Chris Martin scored 20 points to lead Corban (7-8, 14-11). Joel Johnson scored 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds with Caleb Herzberg scoring 14 for the Warriors who shot 55 percent in the first half and 34 percent in the second.

“We talk about effort and resolve,” said NU coach John Van Dyke, “and tonight, our effort in the second half resulted in a win for our team. Our defensive intensity in the second half it what propelled our offense. We were able to score 12 points off turnovers and we outscored Corban 22-2 on the break which was a result of our pressure. We need to carry over the second half to tomorrow night.”

Next, Northwest will take on Northwest Christian at 7:30 p.m. at the NU Pavilion while Corban travels to play Evergreen in Olympia, Wash.
