Northwest University’s Randle wins NAIA 400-meter hurdles title

Northwest University (NU) junior, TJ Randle, blew through competition to win the national championship in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2017 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Outdoor National Track & Field Championships in Mickey Miller Stadium in Gulf Shores, Ala.

Randle defeated Jack Reemtsma of St. Ambrose University by nearly a second as he posted a 52.63 in the final. Reemtsma was second with 53.39 and Jordan Thompson of Allen University was a full second behind in third at 53.63.

With the victory, Randle also earned NAIA All-American honors, finishing in the top eight of the finals. Randle bettered his time in the prelims, with 53.31 and a fourth-place finish. His season’s best was the 42.45 he ran in winning the event at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships.

NU’s Lily Engelbrekt had a 10th place finish in the women’s 1,500-meter coming in at 4:45.35. Engelbrekt’s best this season was a 4:35.54 she ran at the Bryan Clay Invitational.

Sarah Estabrook of NU took 13th in the women’s 5,000-meter run event, crossing the finish line at 18:53.14. Her best time this year was the 17:35.18 she ran at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open on March 17.
