The Juanita High School football defeated Mercer Island Friday in dramatic fashion, 24-17, in overtime at Islander Stadium.
Mercer Island began the game with the home-field advantage and the lead. A 40-yard pass play put the Islanders up 7-0 during the first quarter.
But a seven-yard touchdown pass from halfback Mason McDaniel to tight end Nick Peterson during the second quarter tied the game. A 36-yard field goal with 2:20 left to play in the half gave the Rebels their first lead of the game 10-7.
The scores did not deter the Islanders, as they tied the game with a 25-yard field goal with one second before halftime.
The biggest play of regulation came just 45 seconds into the second half, as Salvon Ahmed broke free from behind the line and scrambled 71-yard past Islander defenders for a touchdown. The play put Ahmed over the century mark for rushing during the game.
A 23-yard pass play for the Islanders tied the game with 52 seconds left in the game.
A one-yard touchdown run by Ahmed during overtime lifted the Rebels to the win.
Juanita improves to 4-0 with the win. The Rebels will host Sammamish at 7 .m. on Friday.
