The Providence Classical Christian volleyball team began what it hopes to be a long playoff run on Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Northwest 1B District One tournament at Mount Vernon Christian High School.

Providence, who suffered only one loss during the regular season, beat Lummi Nation 3-0 in the first round. The Highlanders came out strong, finishing the last set with a 25-12 score. The early morning game didn’t faze the girls, as junior Molly Jorgensen served several ace. Sophomore Madi Marshall and senior Bailey Robertstad warmed up with several kills each.
The Highlanders faced Shoreline Christian, a team Providence swept in nonconference play, in the semifinal. The Providence girls came out ready for a good game, and were all focused and played their best.
In particular, freshman Outside Hitter Jenna Jenkins has really been an asset to the team in the absence of injured starter, senior Reyna Lacalli. The girls went on to replicate their regular-season performance in the district tournament with a 3-0 victory.
Providence advanced to the championship round against long-time foe Mount Vernon.
Both the Highlanders and the ‘Canes fans had plenty to cheer about. Providence fought tooth and nail against the mighty ‘Canes, taking them to four sets but ultimately losing to the tournament champs 3-1.
Freshman libero Claire Lyshol had some incredible digs against Mount Vernon senior Brenna Lubbers. Junior setter Olivia Hatcher had a standout game with several kills herself.
Providence’s solid defense unfortunately wasn’t enough to beat the Hurricanes’ outstanding swings, but the girls felt they played well and were excited to win a set and produce four competitive sets against the Mount Vernon team.
The Highlanders advance as the second seed to the Tri-District tournament, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5 at Crescent High School.
