The Kirkland Junior League softball team picked up a much-needed victory on Monday morning, defeating Asia-Pacific, 9-5, in the second game of Junior Softball World Series pool play at Everest Park.
Kirkland (1-1) won for the first time in the tournament and remained in contention for a place in bracket play, which begins Thursday. The top four teams from Pool A and Pool B advance.
The win wasn’t without drama. The host team gave up a run in the top of the first inning, but rallied for a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the frame.
Asia-Pacific, represented by a team from the City of Makati, in the Philippines, managed to tie the game in the top of the third and fourth innings but never took a lead.
Sasha Mitchell hit the go-ahead double in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring Antonia Norman, Clare Longcore and Kaia Bradford.
Mitchell finished with five RBIs on two hits with a bases-loaded walk. Martina Nacion led Asia-Pacific with two hits and one RBI.
Norman got the start for Kirkland, throwing three innings with two strikeouts and one earned run. Jane Wilson, who pitched six innings on Sunday, closed out the final four innings with five strikeouts and four earned runs.
