It’s been nearly back to the drawing board for the Lake Washington High volleyball team this fall.
After going 11-2 in league and finishing second overall, the Kangs lost all but one of their varsity rotation players. Junior hitter Haley Kubik is the only exception, though Lake Washington will have a large group of upperclassmen with extensive JV experience.
Second-year head coach Stephanie Kuhn, entering her fourth year overall with the program, was named Class 3A KingCo’s Coach of the Year. Of the top teams in the league, Lake Washington had the fewest representatives with individual accolades: Georgia Romine-Black on first team, with two second-team selections.
Kuhn called this season’s team a “melting pot of different levels of experience,” especially with some of the brand-new additions to the squad.
“I think our freshman Avy Cleary is going to be really strong, and once she finds her groove I think she’ll be one of our top hitters along with Haley Kubik,” Kuhn said. “I think [Kubik] be a top producer, as well.”
Because a large portion of the players competed together on JV, many are familiar with one another.
One standout will be senior Mackenna Thompson, a middle blocker last season who will be a setter this fall, running the offense with a familiar group in an unfamiliar position.
“We really turned her into a setter as of a few months ago, but she is really coming along and starting to own that position,” Kuhn said. “I really think she’s starting to find her niche.”
Laney Tiffany, a sophomore, and said her goal this season was personal growth on the back line. Tiffany was a middle blocker last season on JV before switching to opposite hitter.
“It’s harder learning the rotational positions, but the team is not that different because I’m moving up with a lot of the seniors as a team,” she said.
Skylar Brown, Kelsey Crane, Natalie Suvac, Baylee Eaton-Hill, Hallie Anselmi and Lexi Lum are seniors. Joining Kubik in the junior class is Isabel Day. Tiffany, Renee Leewins and Sofia Brekkan are sophomores, and Madi Solis and Eva Cleary are freshman.
The pieces have fit together well, with the Kangs aiming at shaking things up in league, first and foremost. Mercer Island, which won the 2015 KingCo title, was senior-heavy last spring but still returns many of its players. Interlake will be young, and Bellevue has most of its roster back.
The Kangs are scheduled to begin the season against Inglemoor at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at home, and open the league schedule at Redmond High School the next evening.
